Song Mix Sundays #5: With Love

February 14, 2011 § Leave a comment

Looks like WordPress published this week’s mix before I was done editing it! Oops! Thanks to a weekend filled with taxes, paying attention to the Grammy’s, and taking care of a sick Boy, this week’s Song Mix Sunday faced a few delays. Nevertheless, in honor of Valentine’s Day, I present several mini-mixes representing various stages of love. Whether you’re looking, mourning, or in it for the long-haul, there’s a mix in here for you. So enjoy, and happy Valentine’s Day.

1. Scott Pilgrim – Plumtree, Predicts the Future (1997) “I’ve liked you for a thousand years, a thousand years / I’ve liked you for a thousand years, a thousand years…” This song is what every middle school, high school, and college crush feels like. Plus, the title inspired one of the best graphic-novel-turned-movies ever. [download]

2. Engine Heart – Mirah, You Think It’s Like This But Really It’s Like This (2000) “Be still, my heart / Engine turning over, won’t you start? / This one’s come to tear me all apart / Be still, my heart” Wanting love doesn’t always mean wanting the right love. Sometimes you can’t tell your heart to stop, even though you know it won’t be good for you. [download]

3. Say Yes – Elliott Smith, Either/Or (1997) “No one says until it shows and you see how it is / They want you or they don’t / Say yes…” I spent a long time deciding which mix to categorize this song in. I finally decided it fits best here, wanting love from the one you let get away once before. [download]

4. Empire – Jukebox the Ghost, Everything Under the Sun (2010) “Oh my God / You’re the one / I’ve been holding out for / For so damn long…” I have a friend who always told me that you only find love when you’re least expecting it. This song is the moment that finally happens. [download]

1. My Best Friend – The Dashing Suns, Really Like You (2010) The Dashing Suns are a new power-pop, post-punk garage band from Oakland, CA, and every blog I’ve read has described this song as a perfect bromance anthem. Personally, I think it’s the perfect fun-carefree-new-relationship anthem. My boy and I would rather stay in bed all day than do any of that other stuff! [download]

2. Songs of Love – Ben Folds, Sunny 16 EP (2003) “Sing while you have time / Let the sun shine / Down from above / And fill you with songs of love…” Blossoming grade school romances juxtaposed with grown-up feelings. From start to finish, this song feels like that first week when you realize you both like each other a lot and get to hold hands for the first time. [download]

3. First Day of My Life – Bright Eyes, I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning (2005) “This is the first day of my life / Glad I didn’t die before I met you / Now I don’t care, I could go anywhere with you / And I’d probably be happy…” I have another friend who would probably kill me for putting Bright Eyes and Elliott Smith in (almost) the same mix. But I’ve always liked this song, and it gives me butterflies when I listen to it and imagine the future. [download]

4. Love You – The Free Design, …Sing for Very Important People (1970) “I love forget-me-nots / Fluffernutters, sugarpops / I’ll hug you and kiss you and love you” This is a rainbows-and-butterflies-I’m-happy-to-be-alive-cause-we’re-in-love type song. [download]

1. The Luckiest – Ben Folds, Rockin’ the Suburbs (2001) “And in a white sea of eyes / I see one pair that I recognize / And I know / That I am, I am / The luckiest” If you have a sensitive gag reflex, you may want to avoid this song and the three that follow. That said, this song is one of the most beautiful testaments to a real, honest, lasting love that I’ve ever heard. Nothing is deeper than confessing your love reaches the levels of an old man and wife who followed each other to death. A strange way to put it, sure, but real and touching nonetheless. [download]

2. The Way I Am – Ingrid Michaelson, Girls and Boys (2007) “I’ll buy you Rogaine / When you start losing all your hair / Sew on patches to all you tear / Cause I love you more than I could ever promise / And you take me the way I am” No pretense, no hyperbole, just real love that doesn’t ask too much. [download]

3. My Favourite Book – Stars, In Our Bedroom After the War (2007) “Cause I never knew home / Until I found your hands / And when I’m weathered / You come to me / You’re my best friend…” …”I can read you, you’re my favorite book.” [download]

4. Home – Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Up From Below (2009) “Home is wherever I’m with you…” [download]

1. Romance is Boring – Los Campesinos!, Romance is Boring (2010) “We’re proving to each other that romance is boring…” And this is how the beginning of the end… begins. [download]

2. Laura – Girls, Album (2009) “I don’t want to fight anymore / I really want to be your friend forever / Friends until the end of it all…” Sometimes, you just have to let go. But sometimes, you really, really don’t want to. If you’re weathering out enough fights to sing a song about it and how you don’t want it to be over, though, it’s probably time to admit your love is going wrong. [download]

3. I Can Change – LCD Soundsystem, This Is Happening (2010) “But there’s love in your eyes, love in your eyes / Love in your eyes / But maybe that’s just your love of fights / All night…” Wanting it to work, wanting to change to make it work, and James Murphy says it better than I ever could. Love is a murderer. [download]

4. High Horses – The Swell Season, Strict Joy (2009) “And even on our worst days / We were never quite like this / We’ve gone as far as we can go / Without crashing” [download]

1. Imaginary Fights – Blue Roses, Blue Roses (2009) “A matter of time, yes I knew it would be / Until there was a bad dream / In which you went and forgot about me / And cursed the stars and cursed the sea…” He’s gone, you knew it would end, and it’s been a while since it ended. But you can’t help but feel melancholy at train stations or when you hear that one song… [download]

2. World Spins Madly On – The Weepies, Say I Am You (2006) “I thought of you, and where you’d gone / And let the world spin madly on…” This is the song you play on repeat at 2 a.m. while gazing at the stars from your apartment window wondering what would have been if things had gone differently. It’s also a good song for those times when you’re feeling small and alone in the world, whether it’s love-related or not. [download]

3. Ruins – matt pond PA, The Dark Leaves (2010) “I got hit with the handle / When you split through my coat / Now I’m searching through empty pockets / They fill me up with your ghost…” I love the poetry in those lines. And I love the song – a bitterly upbeat anthem to love lost too soon. And I just love mpPA. Period. [download]

4. If She Wants Me – Belle and Sebastian, Dear Catastrophe Waitress (2003) “If you think to yourself, ‘What should I do now?’ / Then take the baton, girl, you better run with it / There is no point in standing in the past / Cause it’s over and done with” It doesn’t always end on a bad note. Sometimes the past can just be the past, and you can anticipate a better future. [download]

1. Babies’ Breath – Brave Saint Saturn, The Light of Things Hoped For (2003) [download]

2. If You Find Yourself Caught in Love – Belle and Sebastian, Dear Catastrophe Waitress (2003) [download]
