Song Mix Sundays #6: Colorful

February 27, 2011 § 1 Comment

Song Mix Sundays took a hiatus last week as I was busy being a bridesmaid in my brother’s wedding. This cell phone snapshot taken at 7 a.m. the morning of the wedding captures my memory how the whole weekend felt:

Sisters cat-napping on the floor before hair and makeup commences. We had a rough night.

Lots of crazy family fun. Congratulations to my brother and sister-in-law for finally having the ceremony they wanted, and safe wishes for my brother as he just deployed for a tour of duty in Iraq this weekend.

After spending a weekend in Houston, Texas where the daytime highs reached 75 degrees and the nighttime lows never dipped below 60, I came home to more snow and grey skies in Philadelphia. All of this gloomy February weather calls for something bright and cheerful. I present to you this weekend a collection of songs all about color – 14 songs in my library with colors in the song title. Less commentary on individual tracks this week, since the theme is pretty straight-forward. Without further ado:

1. Favourite Colour – Tokyo Police Club, Champ (2010) “So tell me what, tell me what’s your favourite colour / Tell me your favourite colour…” [download]

2. That Green Gentleman – Panic At the Disco, Pretty. Odd. (2008) This song is not actually about a green-skinned man, which I was more than a little disappointed to discover the first time I heard it. [download]

3. Green and Gray – Nickelcreek, This Side (2002) “Green is the color that everyone sees all around me / Gray is the color I see around her / She’s just a blur…” A dart-playing champion loses a game in front of that one girl he wants to impress. The dart lands somewhere between green and gray, becoming a metaphor for the love he lost. [download]

4. One Red Thread – Blind Pilot, 3 Rounds and a Sound (2008) “From the first that the line got drawn / It was poison in the land it was on / One red thread in the middle of a song / My only one…” [download]

5. Red Paint – Matt and Kim, Sidewalks (2010) “Hands and red paint / Let’s make some stains / Let’s make some stains getting dark…” [download]

6. Razzle Dazzle Rose – Camera Obscura, Let’s Get Out of This Country (2006) “When I choose my color / It will be Razzle Dazzle Rose” One of the best Crayola crayon colors. [download]

7. The Blues are Still Blue – Belle and Sebastian, The Life Pursuit (2006) “I left my washing in the launderette / You can put some money on it, you can place a little bet / That when I see my washing / The black will be grey and the white will be grey / But the blues are still blue…” [download]

8. Blue and Gold Print – Mates of State, Re-Arrange Us (2008) “I know when the kids are all grown / We’ll still have this blue and gold print…” [download]

9. Sea Green, See Blue. – Jaymay, Sea Green, See Blue. – EP (2009) “It’s not my place to choose / My first love and my only muse / Sea green, see blue…” I fell in love with this song from the moment I heard it in the season 2 finale of How I Met Your Mother. Heartbreaking, honest, and beautiful. [download]

10. Pale Yellow – The Ditty Bops, The Ditty Bops (2004) “Pale yellow holding on / Brace myself to stand / Tell myself it is okay / Taking my own hand…” [download]

11. White Sky – Vampire Weekend, Contra (2010) [download]

12. Golden Haze – Wild Nothing, Golden Haze EP (2010) “Golden haze, hold out for days / Haven’t seen you, haven’t seen anyone…” Wild Nothing appeared on the indie scene in 2009. They’ve got that fuzzy Smiths and R.E.M. inspired sound and Pitchfork likes them, so you know they’re good. [download]

13. Sound of Silver – LCD Soundsystem, Sound of Silver (2007) “Sound of silver talk to me / Makes you want to feel like a teenager / Until you remember / The feelings of a real, live, emotional teenager / Then you think again…” It’s lyrics like these that make me love James Murphy. [download]

14. Color Bars (Instrumental) – Elliott Smith, Place Pigalle Demos [download]
