Song Mix Sundays #6: Colorful

February 27, 2011 § 1 Comment

Song Mix Sundays took a hiatus last week as I was busy being a bridesmaid in my brother’s wedding. This cell phone snapshot taken at 7 a.m. the morning of the wedding captures my memory how the whole weekend felt:

Sisters cat-napping on the floor before hair and makeup commences. We had a rough night.

Lots of crazy family fun. Congratulations to my brother and sister-in-law for finally having the ceremony they wanted, and safe wishes for my brother as he just deployed for a tour of duty in Iraq this weekend.

After spending a weekend in Houston, Texas where the daytime highs reached 75 degrees and the nighttime lows never dipped below 60, I came home to more snow and grey skies in Philadelphia. All of this gloomy February weather calls for something bright and cheerful. I present to you this weekend a collection of songs all about color – 14 songs in my library with colors in the song title. Less commentary on individual tracks this week, since the theme is pretty straight-forward. Without further ado:

Looks like WordPress published this week’s mix before I was done editing it! Oops! Thanks to a weekend filled with taxes, paying attention to the Grammy’s, and taking care of a sick Boy, this week’s Song Mix Sunday faced a few delays. Nevertheless, in honor of Valentine’s Day, I present several mini-mixes representing various stages of love. Whether you’re looking, mourning, or in it for the long-haul, there’s a mix in here for you. So enjoy, and happy Valentine’s Day.

Song Mix Sundays #2: Nihon no Ongaku

I first discovered Japanese pop/rock in high school when I downloaded an mp3 of Ayumi Hamasaki’s “Forgiveness” from a random music blog. I turned into a Japanophile and never looked back – I started watching anime, I studied the language for 3 semesters in college, and I built a rather impressive personal catalogue of J-pop and J-rock.

While a lot of J-pop sounds as bland as mainstream US radio, there are certian artists that stand out with a unique style, even some of the Western mainstream copy-cat ones. These are 10 of my favorite artists and songs from Japan that I think every music fan should check out:

Song Mix Sundays #1: Summer Songs

July 25, 2010 § 1 Comment

I have two music-related addictions: Discovering new artists and sharing the songs that I love with my friends. Since I love sharing music so much, I’ve decided to start a weekly post of some of my favorites, focusing on a new theme each week. Some you might already know, others you may not. This Sunday, it’s my Top 10 Summer Songs.

I tend to associate certain songs and artists with certain seasons. Sometimes it depends on the style of music, sometimes it depends on when I first heard the song or artist, and sometimes a specific memory ties the song to the season. These are 10 songs that remind me of the summer, based a little bit on style and a little bit on memory.
